You make the privatisation of HE sound like a positive development ("..future students should be empowered to make the best choice for them.") and other such tosh. The days of spin are still well and truly alive and kicking. Many of our neighbours in Europe manage to provide people with an HE experience at very little immediate expense to the student. It's not that we can't, but that we won't. It's not driven by economic reality but by questionable ideological reasoning. What a shame that those who benefited from state support in the past appear to believe it is appropriate to burden present and future generations with thousands of pounds of debt. They certainly won't feel any compunction to put anything back into the society which has provided them with the opportunity that HE represents. I would not argue with those who maintain that those who benefit from HE should pay, but that, surely, is all of us.
